Student life outside the city centre: Cork

Moving out for college is often your first real taste of independence and there's a lot to look forward to. But while the idea of having your own place is great, finding the right place to live for your time at uni can be a little daunting.

Once you’ve got your acceptance letter from Munster Technological University, deciding on a place to settle is the next step towards your new student life. There’s lots of areas to stay in Cork, and our guide will help you narrow down your search, sharing the good bits about living outside the city centre.

Closer to nature

While city centre living has some benefits, most aren’t known for their widely available green spaces. And having access to nature or the countryside is more desired than ever before thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic.

While studying at MTU, you’ll have access to plenty of green space right on your doorstep, so you can make the most of nature whenever you take a break from your studies.

You’ll also be in the perfect location to venture further afield on your weekends and holidays. Ireland is known for its beautiful scenery with County Cork being one of the jewels in its crown. Taking the time to visit the stunning Blarney Castle and Gardens to see the Blarney stone is well worth adding to your to do list.

The campus on your doorstep

A huge benefit of living outside the city centre is being within walking distance of the MTU campus. You won’t have to worry about relying on public transport or expensive taxi services!

The Munster Technological University campus is based in Bishopstown, an exciting suburb of Cork. The main college building is home to courses including science, business and humanities, so there are plenty of different types of students to mingle with.

Bishopstown is also well known to locals as a student hotspot and many businesses in the area have also set up shop here with them in mind. So you’ll find there’s lots of amenities geared towards the things you need.

It isn’t all work and no play, though. There are lots of bars and restaurants to keep you entertained outside of college hours, including the famous Bishopstown Bar, where there’s something happening every night of the week!

The price is right

It goes without saying that city living can be expensive. The cost of living in a city centre is generally much higher than living in a suburb or town. You’ll find eating out to be more costly, and the price of a pint or glass of wine can sometimes set you back almost double!

Travelling around a city centre can prove to be an additional expense too, with public transport fares quickly racking up as you navigate your way round the city.

By choosing to live in Bishopstown, you’ll find that most of the local bars and restaurants offer student deals, discounts and dedicated nights out, meaning that not only will you benefit from a great local social scene, your pocket won’t take too much of a hit too!

As you can see, there are plenty of benefits to living outside of Cork’s City Centre, and our accommodation at Melbourn Point is the perfect place to call home during your studies at MTU. Get in touch with our team today to find your home for the 2021/22 academic year.
